The Coldest Shadows

Arcano-archaeologist Elijah knows that digging into the past can be its own reward—or peril. When he’s hired to find an ancient map purported to lead to a mysterious location at the bottom of the world, his professional curiosity is more than roused. But his quest to simply get his hands on the map is more dangerous than he expected—even for a shadow runner.

He and his own team of runners—including everything from a goblin rigger to a troll street samurai—follow a murky trail that takes them from the ruins of Chicago to the jungles of ia. Along the way, they discover that they’re not the only ones looking for this map—and that it may lead to a treasure even greater than anyone could have known. Elijah and his crew plan to get both the map and to its riches first—assuming they survive the very dangerous road trip to get there…

Shadowrun Fire Frost eBook Kai O'Connal

If you like the SHADOWRUN universe you'll like this. The story gives a good mix of the different races and abilities (e.g. a Street Samurai that is a Troll) which is the draw of this universe. Unfortunately, like all SHADOWRUN books, if you are not used to playing the role-playing game, or reading a lot of these books, you will be confused by the world's jargon (minus one star). I found myself having to online many times to find out the meaning of many of the terms because the story did not elaborate. A good story overall, but the ending is a little disappointing (minus another star. equaling a three star review).

Shadowrun Fire Frost eBook Kai O'Connal Reviews

The book takes off well and runs smoothly throughout. The characters develop and are memorable enough to keep the pages turning pretty quickly. There are a few typographical errors and some grammatical problems that detract from the story, but not as serious as you might be led to believe by some of the other reviews.

All in all a worthy read and an enjoyable one.
I love being back in the Shadowrun universe but that's the only reason I finished this book. Several really stupid occurrences that weren't realistic or consistent within the context of the book that were just done to move the plot along. Very one dimensional characters. Not that interesting. Still, most of the other recent Shadowrun titles were pretty good though so I'm glad the franchise is still going.
It's a very good book. I'm nearly haflway done and that's the reason for the one star reduction it's so bleeding short! I'm not asking for Georgy Porgy RR Martin length, but just a little more to get more bang for my buck. I will say it's non-stop action and characters are developed as quick as the combat with mostly snippets given rather than anything long, and are unfortunately they are not too deep and are rather pastiche archetypes.
I've read were Shadowrun books. This one seemed to carry you along at an even pace and deposit you in the action where it was supposed to be I like the characters the second team wasn't really developed like I wanted them to be and I didn't get enough of an introduction to them before the action started. I hope that this is part of another book series or at least flows into another series. All in all for $0.99 it wasn't a bad deal!
I'm a huge fan of the SR universe and this book does a great job of blending the many aspects of the world into a seamless whole. The characters are both memorable and fun and it really did feel like the author picked up his old SR rulebook and made out the characters before he started writing. I thoroughly enjoyed the book but felt like aspects of the plot were rushed, or things that I really wanted to be further developed were glossed over, or forgotten. The way the book is written I totally expected it to be part one of a trilogy but the book ended and I was left hanging. Kind of unsatisfying after a dramatic fight and finish 5 pages before. I still highly recommend the book and I really hope that O'Connal gets more writing contracts.
If you have been waiting for a true Shadowrun novel like I have then wait no more. I am a big fan of this genre and I am a big fan of this book. It was a true joy for me to be back in the world of Shadowrun in the context of the novel and especially a novel as fun, thoughtful, and inclusive of new and old character types. Riggers, technomancers, mages, street samurai, multiple countries and multiple zones. Fully immersive in the Sixth world as it stands today including an intuitive, logical, and fun description of the wireless matrix. The pacing is electric and run and gun is the frequency of that current. We are given a connection to the characters and a connection to their unity that gets deeper throughout. The runners stay runners no matter the odds proving reassuringly and simultaneously unnervingly that biz is still just biz, so ka? The plot increases in complexity and remains mysterious until revealed holding us in anticipation. The author has us invested in the curiosity of the main character throughout. The plot and action is engaging but also the author successfully takes chances with the writing style, which is fantastic to see in the genre of science fiction that can on occasion appear formulaic. One of these chances is where the author boldly presents us with vignette counter perspectives from the point of view of the antagonists during battles creating a metahumanistic view of the action rather than keeping us contained in a more one sided perspective of heroism. I would read every book in the series if you chose to take us there. Congratulations and thank you to the author.
It has been a few years since the last major upheaval in both magic and the Matrix. The corps are still as powerful as ever, so groups of shadowrunners, recruited by the Johnsons, are still in high demand. Join a group as they go from Seattle, to the wastes of Chicago, and down south to the frozen land in order to make the find of the century, provided no one has gotten a better offer and is willing to try to cut them out of the deal But that is life in the shadows after all.

It has been a while since I not only read a shadowrun story, but also played the game (hard to believe its on 5th edition). The changes in the world, the Matrix, and the runners show that you can never be too comfortable with what you know. The story did get a little slow at times, but picked up again - especially when Pineapple decided that something needed to go BOOM. I would say give it a try and support the possible future that is SHADOWRUN.
If you like the SHADOWRUN universe you'll like this. The story gives a good mix of the different races and abilities (e.g. a Street Samurai that is a Troll) which is the draw of this universe.
