What a fabulous story. Our hero, Hitch, is an undertaker along with his aunt. And he is a fabulous protagonist. Young and smart. A truly decent man who could charm the pants of any attractive lady. He picks a female cop who has a few issues. I liked their chemistry. But it's a lot to take on. Circumstantial problems. I highly recommend this author and his series. Just plain exceptionally entertaining.Tags : The Hearse You Came in On (Hitchcock Sewell Mysteries) [Tim Cockey] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Great book
Funny series.
Very funny and witty. Have read the whole series twice and will read them again in a couple of years. I wish he wrote more but he changed
to a totally different kind of writing.
Started out tremendous and then just got a little too rife with unlikely complications. But, I really did enjoy the book overall and would like to read another in the series. Recommended. Lauged out loud many times.
I am not a huge fan of this particular genre of fiction but every once in awhile it's fun to sit down with a good thriller. Fortunately, this one has all the earmarks of the best in the field. It is clever and funny with an engaging narrator, odd characters and plenty of twists and turns. It's a quick read and a fun way to spend an afternoon.
I originally picked it up because the narrator is a funeral director and I come from a family three generations into the business. Having spent plenty of time in the environment, I thought it would be fun to see a little excitement added to the profession. Of course, this was a mistake. It was fun but there were things that just didn't ring true. Fortunately, Sewell's work is only incidental to the story.
Other than that (apart from language that got a little flowery on occasion), I had a good time with this novel. I'm interested to see how the characters develop in future novels.
I couldn't finish it. Maybe is it a good story. But the writing is, for me, not skillful. Reading should be fun, and I wasn't having fun, so I quit.
Near the end of the book, Baltimore undertaker, Hitchcock Sewall contemplates making a "noble effort" and concludes that to attempt a "noble effort in the face of certain failure is not really noble at all. It is just plain stupid".
After all that "Hitch" has been through to get to that point, you have to give him high marks for paying attention. You also have to give Tim Cockney high marks for such an entertaining first novel. It has memorable, hilarious and hateful characters. It has funny, tense and always well scripted moments.
And it also has a mystery. Who killed the blackmailing tennis pro. And who is still blackmailing a US Senate candidate. As we read toward the answer to that conclusion we spend time at The Screaming Oyster Saloon, Sewall & Sons Family Funeral Home, Heayhague, Maine (pronounced Hee Haw),The Moose Run Inn and various and sundry locations around Baltimore, including the police station.
The characters are priceless. You will chuckle, you will smile, you will laugh out loud and you will come away with the feeling that your money was well invested in this promising new novelist.
